The 2012 NASCAR season is upon us. I got this intersting article off of the internet. I agree with most of it except that Kevin Harvick will win the championship.

Anticipation is high and a host of teams and drivers are already predicting championship challenges or improved results from last season. So who will really rally? What will be the big issues of the season? FOXSports.com puts it on the line and offers the following 10 bold predictions for 2012:

10. Closing down

The down economy and loss of sponsorship has clearly affected a slate of teams entering the 2012 season. That’s abundantly clear in the lowered overall team numbers at elite organizations such as Roush Fenway Racing and Richard Childress Racing. But the impact is not over. Look for at least one team currently in the top 40 to not make it to season’s end as lack of sponsorship becomes too much of a barrier to overcome.

9. It matters

NASCAR has worked diligently to make sure that the move to electronic fuel injection does not impact any specific team, but is an equal change across the board. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a team that is ahead of the curve on figuring out how to take advantage of any change in the sport. While the larger teams, with a wealth of resources, should have an advantage with EFI, we’ll take it a step further: At least one top driver will be affected by failure related to EFI early in the season.

8. We’re back

Michael Waltrip Racing has been steadily gaining ground in the Sprint Cup ranks. This year, it has bolstered the effort of Martin Truex Jr. by adding veteran Chase for the Sprint Cup contender Clint Bowyer as well as splitting a third car between Michael Waltrip and Mark Martin. Truex will step up with the added support/pressure of his stellar teammates and Bowyer will adjust to the system quickly. The result? Michael Waltrip Racing will have at least one driver in the Chase this season.

7. Keeping pace

Don’t overlook Kurt Busch this season. Sure, the 2004 Cup champion has shifted to a smaller team, but Phoenix Racing has long been a factor at restrictor-plate tracks and brings a more in-depth, supported effort to the track this season. Busch, meanwhile, has something to prove after an offseason split with the powerful Penske operation. The combination will be potent. Busch will be in Victory Lane this year – and not just to shake his winning brother’s hand.

6. Rounding out

Juan Pablo Montoya is coming off a dreadful season at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, one in which he finished 21st in the standings and went winless. This year, he’s back in play – and finally hitting a mark he’s long coveted. Montoya will add to his two-win tally in the Cup ranks – and he’ll do so by heading to Victory Lane on an oval track. So far, he’s only won on road courses. That changes in 2012.

5. The Avenger

Darian Grubb has been a hot topic for months as the championship-winning crew chief revealed upon taking the title that he had already been informed he would be parting ways with Tony Stewart, then announcing his move to Denny Hamlin’s team. Grubb wants a repeat championship every bit as much as his previous owner/driver does. And look for Grubb to have an edge. A rested Hamlin will return to championship form this season and, under Grubb’s direction, will finish ahead of Stewart in the points standings, pleasing the crew chief greatly.

4. This is it

Dale Earnhardt Jr. enters the 2012 season with a stunning 129-race winless streak. Earnhardt Jr. won in his first season with Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, but has not returned to Victory Lane with the organization. He made the Chase in 2011, his first season working with crew chief Steve Letarte, and the team challenged for wins over the course of the season. Look for them to take the next step this season. Earnhardt Jr. will snap that winless streak. He’s particularly strong on restrictor-plate tracks, so look to those for his best chance to overcome the barrier. That winless streak will not last the season.

3. My turn

AJ Allmendinger has come so close to winning a Sprint Cup points race over the years. Now, he’ll do just that. Allmendinger is in the best equipment of his career. In joining Penske Racing this season, Allmendinger will have the most stable surroundings and strongest teammate of his career. In his sixth full season of Sprint Cup competition, Allmendinger will join the list of race winners. Count on it.

2. Sheriff

Watch out, championship contenders. There’s a new threat in town. Kasey Kahne, long capable of challenging for wins and a championship berth, has united his talent with that of Hendrick Motorsports. Keeping crew chief Kenny Francis at the helm of his team, the driver has everything he needs to be successful. And he will be. Immediately. Kahne will eclipse his higher-profile Hendrick teammates – five-time champ Jimmie Johnson, four-time champ Jeff Gordon and most popular Earnhardt Jr. – and be the top-performing team within the Hendrick arsenal. He will earn multiple wins and finish higher in the points than anyone else at Hendrick.

1. Team Danica

Can Danica Patrick show up her Nationwide Series team owner? Can she win a NASCAR race in 2012 before Earnhardt Jr. does? Earnhardt Jr. enters the season riding a 129-race winless streak; Patrick enters racing full time in the Nationwide ranks for the Earnhardt Jr.-owned team for the first time and with 10 Cup races on her slate. In 25 Nationwide starts, Patrick has an average finish of 22.9; in 435 Cup starts, Earnhardt has an average finish of 16.8 (he was also a two-time Nationwide champ). The two share much in common – mass fan appeal, marketing savvy and stellar sponsor backing. So which one can become a 2012 victor first? While we think that Junior will snap his streak this season, we say Danica wins first.

And since we’re on a roll, we’ll throw in a bonus prediction. Who will win the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship? It’ll be a newcomer.

He’s your champ

After years of knocking at the door, this year a new driver will hoist the NASCAR Sprint Cup trophy. Third in the standings the last two seasons, this season will belong to Kevin Harvick. The RCR driver will not only excel during the regular season – as he has begun to do on an annual basis – but he’ll carry that through the postseason. With crew chief Shane Wilson at the helm, and with RCR dropping back to a three-car operation, Harvick will step up and become a father and a Cup champion in the same year.

Happy 2012

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season. Now with the season opener for Nascar Sprint Cup series coming up it’s time to go back to racing. So what’s going on around here, well let’s see.

3 time Sprint Cup Champion and last years Champion Tony Stewart is back of course, though his sponsor appears to be changing with Office Depot becoming a part time sponsor and Burger king is going to have it their way for some races also. Mobil 1 will also pick up 11 races. Longtime crew chief Greg Zipadelli will become the director of competition and Steve Addington will become the new crew chief.

Danica Patrick will attempt to run in 10 Sprint Cup races including the Daytona 500. She will be driving the #10 car with Go Daddy as her main sponsor. This is the number she used in her early years when she was karting. She wanted #7 but Robbie Gordon will not give the number up. Stewart-Hass Racing is looking for another part time driver so the team can run a full schedule. Patrick will be running a full Nationwide schedule.

Dale Earnhardt Jr will be back driving the #88 again with the Army National Guard and Diet Mountain Dew staying with him as sponsors. He made the Race for the Chase but was never in real contention for the championship. Will he go winless again or is this the year he finally breaks this horrible winless streak?

The Ford Motorcraft\Quick lane Ford of the famous Wood Brothers Racing is running a part time schedule this year, just like last year unless it can find a full time sponsor. guess who is driving? Well that is a good question, Ricky Stenhouse, David Ragan, or Trevor Bayne who won the 500 for the Wood Brothers last year. It is rumored Trevor Bayne is looking for a full time ride.

Who knows what is going on at Richard Petty Motorsports. At this point the #43 will be driven by Eric Almirola as A.J. Allmindinger has left to take over the #22 to replace Kurt Busch. However Kurt Busch may come over to keep Best Buy as a sponsor, and Amirola has Smithfield Foods and the U.S. Air Force behind him. David Ragan is also in the picture to drive the #43. This is just the tip of the iceberg for Petty Motorsports. They need to get things settled with the Daytona 500 looming in the near future.

There’s plenty more going on and will update again soon. If the off season is any indication of how the regular season is going to be like, then we are in for a fun ride. (pun intended).

I heard through the grapevine that:

Kurt Busch tirade at Jerry Punch: During Sunday’s Ford 400 at Homestead, analyst Jerry Punch tried to interview Kurt Busch after the driver was forced out of the race with transmission problems. What resulted was a profanity-laced tirade by Busch who didn’t want to wait until the ESPN control booth threw it to Punch. In the end, Punch decided he had enough and walked away from Busch telling his producers, “never mind, never mind. Gee and I thought Kyle was the bad guy in the Busch Brothers. Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Kurt Busch Statement: “Unfortunately, our result in the season-ending race at Homestead on Sunday was not what we had hoped for as a team. In my frustration with the loss of my transmission early in the race, I let my emotions get the better of me. I regret having done this and apologize to the sponsors of Penske Racing , to NASCAR, its fans, to the media and in particular, Dr. Jerry Punch. Once again the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

NASCAR has fined Kurt Busch $50,000 for his actions during the Nov. 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. NASCAR determined that Kurt Busch violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing inappropriate hand gesture; abusive language) of the 2011 NASCAR Rule Book. In issuing the penalty, NASCAR cited Kurt Busch’s “poor judgment in making an inappropriate hand gesture” when he drove his car into the garage early in the race after it experienced transmission problems. In addition, NASCAR said Kurt Busch showed “disrespect towards a media member,” an incident that followed similar inappropriate media confrontations earlier in the season.

Shell and Pennzoil are disappointed with recent actions by driver Kurt Busch at the final race of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race season,” the company said in a statement. “His actions are in no way consistent with the way we want our brands represented and we have expressed our disappointment and concerns directly to Penske Racing. Did i mention that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree?

Tony Stewart to Present Annual ‘Stewie Awards’: Tony Stewart will host the fifth annual ‘Stewie Awards’ show on Thursday, December 1, live from Las Vegas on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. The ‘Stewies,’ which features Stewart’s entertaining and irreverent take on the best, boldest and funniest moments from the 2011 NASCAR season, will be awarded during a live broadcast hosted by Stewart and Matt Yocum from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday, December 1 (9:30 pm ET / 6:30 pm PT).

There’s more coming about changes during the off season soon.

#14 Tony Stewart wins the Ford 400 at Phoenix International Speedway Sunday. He won the race for his 5th victory of the season and all 5 of his wins came during the chase. So he smoked the field winning half of the 10 races in the chase. He is the first owner/driver to win the championship since the late Alan Kuiwicki in 1992. #99 Carl Edwards finished second in the race and the championship. It was his second time finishing second for the championship. They both ended up tied in points with 2403. However Stewart wins with the tie breaker as he had 5 wins to Edwards 1.

There were 26 lead changes among 15 drivers and 8 cautions for 54 yellow flags and a 1 hour 14 minute rain delay. #14 Tony Stewart won his 3rd championship. His other titles came in 2002 and 2005. He becomes the 9th driver to win 3 or more championship. The other drivers with three: Darrell Waltrip, Lee Petty, Cale Yarborough and David Pearson are either NASCAR Hall of Fame members or nominees. Stewart is also the seventh champion to win the season finale. Tony Stewart is the only driver to win a Cup championship in the pre-chase format (2002) and the Chase format (2005,2011).

Stewart is the first driver to enter the Chase winless in the regular season to win the championship. This is the first time 1-2 in points have been tied at the end of the season. Tony Stewart’s nine top-fives are the fewest top-five finishes by a champion since Bill Rexford had five in the 1950 season with only 17 starts. At 40 years old he is the oldest champion to win in the Chase era.

So now the season is over and will wait to see what changes will be made in the off season. (and there will be some) I will elaborate on that in the next article. So now am going to have to watch football until Daytona in February.

Wishing all a Happy Thanksgiving.

I know the title is a little cheesy and a play on words. but what a race Sunday at Phoenix International Speedway. A battle to the very end, With kasey Khane, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart. Kasey Khane won for the first time this season at Phoenix Sunday for his 12th victory overall and his first win in 81 races dating back to September of 2009 in Altanta. It was his first win in a Toyota as his other 11 victories all were with Dodge. He became the 18th diferent driver to win this year, one short of the record of 19 different winners. the 4 seasons Nascar had had 19 different winners dates back to 1956, 1858, 1961, and 2001. It was the first time since 1998 that a number 4 car won a race which was at Martinsville in a Chevy driven by Bobby Hamilton.

kasey made have won the battle, but who is going to win the war? #99 Carl Edwards was second with #14 Tony Stewart 3rd. Carl is leading the points race by 3 points going into the final race this coming Sunday at Homestead. This makes it the closest margin between first and second in Nascar history. Carl must win in Miami Sunday. If he doesn’t then Tony Stewart will be the Champion, no matter where he finishes. Tony also holds the tie breaker which is best finishes. All other drivers in the chase have been eliminated from the chase. This going to be a great race to watch. This is what Nascar is all about the top 2 drivers battaling for the championship. I can hardly wait.

And finally Kyle Busch offered his #18 truck for Ron Hornaday to drive next season. Nice gesture, but it does not make up for Kyle taking Hornaday out of contention for the truck chamionship this year. I have never seen retaliation done so blantanly in my life. And to boot taking him out under caution while Ron is trying to win the race let alone the chanpionship.

Oh one more thing. Did you see David Reiutimann finished 7th, good for him as he looking for a ride next year since Michael Waltrip did not renew his contract. Best of luck to David as he tries to secure a ride for next year. It is not an easy task.

What a weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. First off Kyle Busch put a whole new meaning in being in the pits as he sat on the pit box yesterday, after he asked his crew for permission first. they all said yes after a no sugar coated apology in a team meeting.

Tony “Smoke” Stewart comes home for the 4th win of the year all of them coming in the chase. Tying kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick for the most wins so far. Carl Edwards finished second and is only 3 points ahead of Stewart. Then he stopped Tony on pit road and congradulated him. Carl is a classy guy. So it looks like it is going to be done to Edwards or Stewart for the championship. Like them both but Tony has 2 championships and Carl has none. So am rooting for Carl.

In other news David Reutimann will not return for the 2012 season with Micheal Waltrip racing these past 5 years. Waiting to see who he ends up with. I like David as he is a local from this area. Used to watch his dad Buzzie Reutimann race at local tracks many years ago. Buzzie was a very good driver. So am wishing the best for David Reutimann.

Oh and who is replacing him? None other than Mark Martin on a part time schedule. Mark either race full time or retire is all I have to say about that. So MWR has Martin, Martin Truex and Clint Boyer lined up for next year. Micheal Waltrip is going to share time in the drivers seat with Martin. Again, Micheal go full time or retire.

Finally a bill has been introduced to make auto racing the “offical” state sport. If the legislature approves it January 10th, then it become offical July first, just in time for the Daytona race July 4th.

So now it’s off to Phoenix and then finale in Miami.

The last time I used this title was because Kyle Busch came out of no where and won a race. this time it is a little bit different. So Friday night in the Nascar truck series Kyle Busch wrecked 53 year old many time champion Ron Hornaday under caution. He pushed him into the wall very hard and Nascar told him to park his truck for the night, which I have never seen done before. Then on top of that they said he could not compete in the Nationwide series race this past weekend and that he also could not race in the Sprint Cup race in Texas. Wow, as he is one of the 12 drivers in the Race to the Chase championship. Stick a fork in him as he done for the year. This is a first for Nascar, but he hasn’t been playing by the rules for a long time and Nascar has had enough. Wonder if his sponsors have also, let alone Joe Gibbs Racing.

Ron Hornaday going for another truck championship said, “if Nascar hadn’t done something then I was going to buy Tommy Baldwins cup car and make sure he does not finish another race.” Busch had no comment. But now after he had a talk with Joe Gibbs, he is apologizing to everyome JGR Racing, his team, to Nascar, his sponsors and to Ron Hornaday. Intentionally wrecking someone under caution on national TV, WOW. Am not sure he will live this one down. I don’t a gree by any means what he did, but he sure is helping the ratings.

Well I can toot my own horn again as I picked Tony Stewart to win at Martinsville. He passed Jimmie Johnson with 2 laps to go for his 3rd victory this year. All of them have come since the Chase started. In 3rd place was Jeff Gordon, followed by Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Jeff burton and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

#99-Edwards (who was a lap down on two separate occasions and got the lucky dog twice), and #39-Newman. #17-Kenseth, who came into the race second in points and started second, was involved in a late race accident and finished 31st. #99-Edwards leads the Chase by 8 points over #14-Stewart. There were 23 lead changes among 12 drivers and 18 cautions for 108 yellow flag laps.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will test Electronic Fuel Injection at Martinsville Speedway as research and development continues leading up to the full implementation of EFI in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the 2012 season. Cars will be on track Monday, October 31 from 10am – 4 pm/et. Currently nine teams have entered for the test. So one of the oldest tracks is taking us into the world of fuel injection. Kind of neat that Martinsville has been around since 1949 and orginally was a dirt track, it was paved in 1955.

Now it’s off to Texas Motor Speedway as the chase starts to wind down for the final 3 races. It is still to hard to pick who will be the Sprint Cup Champion. Can Carl Edwards hag on to get his first championship, or does Tony “Smoke” Stewart get his 3rd title. Of course Jimmie Johnson is going to do his best to make it 6 in a row. And Jeff Gordon who led the most laps with a 111 total is back in the mix. One these drivers is going to win it all, the rest are just racing for a win. So with that said, Jimmie Johnson to win at Texas.

Well we didn’t have the big one (accident), but we did have something big happen, and that was a big bore. What is with this 2 car pre race determined teams? My gosh rating and attendance are both down and now we have this? NASCAR needs to go back to template racing, meaning a different template for each manufacturer. Then they can get back to old fashioned pack racing and the cars will look different so you can actually root for a manufacturer and driver instead of the way it is now which is rooting for just a driver.

In spite of all this, there was a good finish with Clint Boyer getting the checkered flag and team mate Jeff Burton coming in second. Jeff was actually the lead car and of the tandem and then at the very end Boyer made his move and it was a close finish, his best finish this year. Burton said afterward he expected that he was going to try to go for the win and was not upset saying I would have done the same thing teamates or not.

Boyer got his first victory of the year and the 100th win for Richard Childress Racing. Of course as most everyone knows Clint Boyer is moving over to Micheal Waltrip Racing next year. This finish and a series of accidents sure shook up the points standings. With eight laps left Reagan Smith hit the wall so hard that they needed to replace some of the safer barrior.

Carl Edwards who by finishing 11th extended his point lead to 14 point over team mate Matt Kenesth. There were hard feelings after the race as drivers were upset at etiquette in the closing laps. Stewart had been working with RCR driver Paul Menard during the second half of the race, but Menard seemed to offer no help when the race restarted after Smith’s accident with two laps to go. Instead of winning he finished seventh.

Jeff Gordon was furious when Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne bailed on him over the final two laps. It was part of a Ford pact made before the weekend began, but then the blue oval drivers were told they were to help Edwards and Kenseth, the two championship contenders. Gordon faded to a 27th place finish.

Harvick and Kyle Busch were both in accidents, and five-time defending series champion Johnson finished 26th as he and partner Earnhardt never made their charge to the front.

“Our championship hopes are done just because of this two-car Talladega draft,” said Kurt Busch, who is sixth in the standings, 50 points behind Edwards, who finished 36th.

Dave Blaney worked with Brad Keselowski the entire race, and they finished third and fourth. Did I just say Dave Blaney finished third at Talladega? Well good for him and his underfunded team. That fourth place finish for Keselowski puts him in fourth place in the standings.

I sure did not pick the top four finishers, after doing well for a few weeks in a row. Now on to Martinsville. I have no idea who is going win and this Chase just keeps getting more interesting each and every week.

Finally for those of you who watched the truck race Saturday got a real treat when 53 old Micheal Waltrip got his fith win in 115 starts and his first victory since 2004. Then 53 year old teamate Ron Hornaday came home second. The first Chevy truck to win at Talledaga. Hornaday was supposed to win but two other tandems were closing and trying to make the switch would have cost them quite a few spots. Wallace got a call from team owner Kevin Harvick who asked him to fill in for Elliot Sadler who decided to stay home with wife who is expecting their second child at anytime. He was so happy and appreciative that I watched the post race interview several times. It was a special moment in racing.

P.S. Tony Stewart to win at Martinsville.

By now most everyone is aware of the tragedy at Las Vegas Speedway last Sunday as 33 year old Dan Wheldon sucumbed to injuries in a 15 car fiery wreck as his car went airborne and into the catch fence. He was racing for only the 3rd time this year after winning the Indianapolis 500 for the 2nd time in May. Starting at the back of the field which was part of the challege he was racing for a chance to win 5 million dollars to be split with a fan. He had moved up 10 positions in the 34 car field then the crash occurred on lap 11. May they never race Indy cars again at las Vegas. There were many concerns before the race because of the steep banking where everyone just went flat out in a pack.

He was scheduled to race in Austraila next weekend in the Surfers Paradise Gold Coast 600 in two 300 kilometer touring car races. And next year he was scheduled to take over Danica Patrick’s ride as she is moving to the Nationwide Series full time next year.

What you may not know is that he was born in the small English village of Emberton in Buckingshire County north of London, and started driving go-karts at age 4. He won 8 carting titles in the 90′s in England. Having failed to secure financial backing in Europe he moved to the United States in 1999. In 2005 he became the first British driver to win the Indianapolis 500 since Graham Hill in 1966. Wheldon won the race for the second time this year. With his film-star good looks and his atheletic prowess it is no wonder that Americans took him to their hearts. He will be always remembered as a great driver, husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

In closing I was always proud to have him living in my city of St. Petersburg, Florida which he dearly loved and spoke very highly of living here. He was and is a true inspiration to many people young and old, both on and off of the track.
